James H. Wright, 43, former night editor of the Crawfordsville Journal-Review died Monday night at his home in Wakarusa, Ind after an illness of 3 months. Mr. and Mrs. Wright purchased the Wakarusa Tribune in August 1952 and had operated it since that time. In 1962, they converted the plant to one of the first newspaper offset printing operations in the state.
At the time of his death, Mr. Wright was Vice Chairman of the Congregation of the Central Christian Church of Elkhart; president of the Olive Township School BUilding Corp; vice chair of the Indiana University Journalism Alumni Council; member of the board of Lakeland Girl Scout Council and member of the B oy Scout troop committee.
Mr. Wright was past president of the Indiana Democratic Editorial Association; the Wakarusa Parent-Teacher Association and the Wakarusa Lions Club, in addition to serving a term of the Wakarusa Town Board.
Mr. Wright was born June 20, 1923, at Indianapolis, the only child of James W. and Bessie Blaydes Wright. He was garduated from high school at Danville, Ind and attended both Purdue and Indiana universities, majoring in journalism. Much of his earlyy life was spent in Roachdale. He was married on June 1, 1946 to Joanne Whitenack of Warsaw.
Mr. Wright had worked on a number of newspapers, including the Indiana Daily Student at Indiana University, the Bloomington, Ind Star-Courier, the Louisville Courier-Journal and the Fremont, Neb Guide Tribune before joining the staff of the Journal-Reivew. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi journalism fraternity the Hoosier State Press Association, the National Newspaper Association, the Wakarusa Chamber of Commerce and Masonic Lodge.
The survivors include the widow, Mrs. Joanne Wright; three children, Janet, JW and Joel, all at home and the mother, Mrs. Bessie Wright of Rt 2, Roachdale. He was preceded in death by his father, a former Putnam County auditor.
Burial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church at Barnard. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday April 2 in the Central Christian Church at Elkhart, Dr. Philip Byron Carlisle, pastor of the church will be in charge of both services. - kbz
