Darlington - Damon C. (Skeet) Wray, prominent Darlington businessman and World War I veteran, died suddenly at 11 a.m. Monday after suffering a heart attack. He was stricken at his farm southeast of here. Born in New Market where he spent his boyhood, Mr. Wray was a graduate of New Market High School. He married Bernice Seamon of New Market, who survives. A resident of Darlington most of his life, Mr. Wray was a leader in the civic and business affairs of this community. He was a member of the New Market Christian Church, 25-year member of the Darlington Masonic Lodge and a director of the Farmers & Merchants bank of Darlington. He also was active in the Darlington Conservation Club. Mr. Wray, who was widely known in veterans circles, was a 30-year member of the American Legion. At the time of his death he was serving as commander of the Montgomery County Council of the Legion. He also was a charter member of the Darlington Legion Post and a former commander of the post. In addition to his activitiy in the American Legion, Mr. Wray also was a leader in the Indiana National Guard for a number of years. During his period he was commanding officer of the Darlington Company of the 151st infantry. Surviving, besides the widow, are a daughter, Mrs. Rebecca J. Degitz, West Lafayette; a sister, Mrs. Leona Groves, New Ross, and two grandchildren. The body was taken to the Smith Funeral Home in Darlington pending arrangements for the services.

Officials of the Montgomery County Council of the American Legion have announced that the next regular meeting of the council will be held in August at the Legion home in Wingate. The meeting previously scheduled for Monday, July 21, at Wingate was cancelled because of the sudden death of Damon C. (Skeet) Wray, of Darlington, the council commander. Mr. Wray died at his farm southeast of Darlington after suffering a heart attack. Legion posts of the county will join in honoring him at funeral and burial services. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. (CDT) Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home in Darlington. The burial will be at Masonic Cemetery in Crawfordsville. The funeral party is expected to reach the cemetery about noon Thursday. The military salute will be given by the Darlington Post. Colors of the Darlington Post and the Crawfordsville Post will be unfurled at the graveside.- thanks so much to Sue P. for both of these - greatly appreciated !
