Elmer C. Wood, 81, of 711 S. Washington Street, former Crawfordsville fire chief died Thursday afternoon at Carment Nursing Home after a long illness. Mr. Wood served as chief of the city fire dept. 9 years, prior to which period for 4 years he was the assistant chief. He was an Army veteran of WWI. Mr. Wood was a member of the Smartsburg Christian Church. A son of Isiah and Mary Wood, he was born August 15, 1889 in Tompkinsville, KY. He was married in Texas on May 20, 1919 to Anna Black, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Guy and Bob of Crawfordsville; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Surber and Mrs. Betty Birch of Crawfordsville. Mrs. Ima Wilhite of Anderson and Mrs. Lory Hartung of Niles, Michigan and 15 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. A son preceded him in death. Funeral rites will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Leland Brett the minister and burial in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
