Mrs. Malissa B. Wilson, nee Bartley was born Jan 6, 1842 in Franzeburg, Coshocton County, Ohio. With her widowed mother, three brothers: E.T; Thomas and Oscar; two sisters, Elizabeth and Marie, she came to Illinois in September, 1848 settling in Calhoun, Richland County.
One of her relatives was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. She was the granddaughter of Governor Mordecai Bartley of Ohio and niece of Bishop Edward Thompson of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
She was married to J.E. Wilson March 17, 1861 at Calhoun, Illinois. To this union four children were given: William O of Hume, Illinois; John Thomas, deceased; Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Lucas of Waveland, Ind and Charles E. of Hume. She with her family moved to Edgar County in 1887 liing near Hume on a farm known as the "Smallwood Section" until 1910, when they moved to Hume where she has since resided.
She was converted and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church when 13 years of age and has lived the life of a devoted Christian.
She has taken a prominent part in the Sunday School Mission Society Temperance work and in fact all lines of Christian work. She had been a leader in the WCTU work and of late sperintendent of the flower mission.
As a wife of an old soldier she was a member of the Woman's Relif Corps.
All of her cildren, all of her grandchildren except Mrs. Edith Demaree, one brother, ET Barley of Calhoun, Ill, one sister Mrs. Mary Bosley of Olney, Ill were present at the time of her department. Everybody has kindly rememberances which they like to relate more. -typed by kbz
