Merle Leland Wilkinson, 70, retired accountant and former county recorder died of a coronary occlusion at 12:20 a.m. Friday at Culver Hospital. He had been hospitalized for his heart condition since June 12. Mr. Wilkinson was elected recorder for two consecutive terms (1932-40) on the Republican ticket. He was employed by several Crawfordsville firms as an accountant before and after his just before retirement in 1961 was a bookkeeper for the State Highway Department. A lifelong resident of this area, he was graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1917. He had been a member of the Garfield Christian Church since 1915. He was born on May 8, 1897, the son of Aaron Edwin and Luella Binford Wilkinson of southeast of Crawfordsville. He was married on Dec. 16, 1925, to Edith Hall who preceded him in death. Surviving are two sons, Glen of Fremont, Calif., and Leland of Crawfordsville; three brothers, Behmer W. and Howard, both of Crawfordsville, and Dr. Fred Wilkinson of Morristown, Tenn.; two sisters, Delzie Switzer of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Georgetta Cloyd of Marshall; six grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Two sisters preceded him in death. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Hunt & Son Funeral Home. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Saturday. – jlr
