Wicks - Phoebe Hays

Phoebe A. Hays was born in Butler County, Ohio Sept 11, 1824. When about 10 years of age she came to Montgomery County, Ind with her parents where she has resided for the last 73 years of her life. On August 6, 1846 she was united in marriage to Morris Wicks. This union was blessed with 7 children 2 of them dyin gin infancy, and one, a daughter who had aattained the age of womanhood about 8 months ago. Grandmother Wicks, as she wa sknown was a Christian.
She united with the Methodist Church when 16 years old, but moving from the vicinity where the ME Church was situated and being deprived of church priveleges, she then united with the Christian Church at Walnut Chapel. She has been a faithful and consecreated member always feeling quite an interest in the masters work. Although she has been an invalid for the oast 7 years of her life, yet she bore her afflictions with patience, often expressing implicit confidence in God. While her temporal wants were supplied by her children as far as it was possible for them to do, yet there was another arm she was trusting in for strength. Consequently she with Paul was made to rejoice in adversity and affliction, believing that the afflications of the present would some day be revealed to her glory. and when she realized that she was nearing that transition state called death she had no fears, for the valley was lighted p with the presence of Him who had led her safely along the pathway of her temporal life.
Her last words were that she was trusting in Jesus, and that her children seek to meet her in heaven. She leaves a husband, 4 children and a large concourse of friends to cherish her memory. She departed this life Nov 22, 1899 being 75 years 2 months 12 days old at time of death. Funeral services were Saturday Nov 25 at the Walnut Chapel Christian Church by Rev. JC Francis. Her remains were laid to rest in Knights of Pythias Cemetery at Mace. - typed by kbz
