Rees Littleton Whittington, eldest son of William and Rebecca Jane Whittington, was born at Waveland, Montgomery County, Indiana, February 28, 1850 and died at his home in Bedford, Taylor county, Iowa, Sunday, July 27, 1941, aged 91 years, 4 months and 29 days. He was educated in the public schools of Montgomery County where, some years later, he taught school, met and was married to Martha Ellen Conner, who preceded him in death. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Whittington continued to reside in Indiana, where Mr. Whittington was engaged in various phases of business including livestock sales, the livery trade and later in the wholesale hardware business at Indianapolis. At one time he, in partnership with an uncle, owned and operated the Indianapolis street railway system. The family moved to Taylor County, near Bedford, in 1882 where he had continued his residence more than a half-century. A member of the Freedom church in Indiana, he transferred his membership to the Bedford Baptist church and has continued his church affiliation therein. Surviving are his two daughters, Mrs. J. G. Sawyer of Oxford, Nebr., and Hallie Whittington of Bedford; one grandson; seven great-grandchildren; his youngest brother, Walter Whittington of Akron, Ohio, and a sister, Mrs. Abbie Deer of Shelbyville, Indiana, together with several nieces and nephews. The funeral services were held at the Walker & Shum Funeral Home Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O. H. Hallgrimson. Burial was in the Fairview cemetery. - thanks so much, Sue P :)
