Mary Ellen Whittington, widow of John T. Whittington, died at her home in Cayuga, Friday, July 17, after several weeks illness. She was born in Crawfordsville, April 17, 1853, the only child of Edmund and Susan Deere. When the baby was eleven days old the young mother died, leaving her child to the care of her sister Mary E. Deere, whose husband Joel G. Deere, was the brother of the child's father. She was taken into the home and hearts of these relatives and became as dear to them and to the other children of the family as their own. She grew to womanhood with the family living near Bluff Mills, and in 1879 was married to John T. Whittington. The young couple began their married life on the farm near New Market, later moving to Cayuga. To this union six children were born, one died in infancy; those surviving are Clyde, Garret, Frank, Julia and Betty, who are living in Cayuga and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the home Sunday and interment was at Freedom cemetery. Of the large family of eleven children with whom the deceased was reared, only four are left: Elva D. Whittington, and George W. Deere, Crawfordsville; John H. Deere, D.D. , of Pomona, Calif., and Stephen Deere of Brown's Valley. -- I had typed this once but never got it up for some reason so glad that Sue P. sent it our way :) Now, you can enjoy! - kbz
