James Thomas Whittington died at 9 o'clock Saturday night at his home, 321 Market. He had been an invalid for 12 years and for the past four years had been blind. Mr. Whittington was born in Waveland, Ind., March 8, 1853. He was the son of William and Rebecca Whittington. He married Ellen May Cowan April 15, 1874 in Waveland. Mr. and Mrs. Whittington came to Kansas in 1885, and lived first at Aetna, in Barber county. They came to Emporia in 1894. Mr. Whittington is survived by his widow; a daughter, Mrs. Josie M. Cole, of Independence; two brothers, R. L. Whittington, Bedford, Iowa, and Walter A. Whittington, Akron, Ohio, and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Canine, Oxford, Ind., and Mrs. Abbie Deer, Indianapolis, Ind. A daughter, Florence Blanche, died in 1886 in Barber County and a son, Cecil, died in Emporia in 1898. Funeral services were to be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon in the Roberts-Blue Funeral chapel, conducted by Rev. O. M. Showalter, and interment was to be in Maplewood cemetery.
