Mary Ida White, wife of George White, of Smartsburg, was born April 27, 1859, and died March 2, 1897, of pneumonia, aged 37 years, 10 months and 5 days.
She was an intense sufferer during her last sickness, which lasted about two weeks, and on Tuesday morning at 6 o’clock the spirit took its flight to the better world.
She leaves an aged mother, a brother, a loving husband and four daughters; Bessie, aged 13 years; Ella, aged 9 years; Lela, aged 7 years; and Ida, aged 7 months.
She was a good Christian woman, having early confessed her Lord and Savior. Although she had all the troubles incident to motherhood, she was never too much worried to help a neighbor in need, especially in sickness, and was always ready to lend a helping hand. She was one of the most faithful workers in the Christian Church at Smartsburg. Although we shall miss the kind face and loving smile of Sister White, let us look up to the “Omnipotent One” “who doeth all things well,” and trust that some day not far away we may meet her on the other side of the “river of death,” where no sorrow ever comes, neither sighing nor crying, but where all is peace and love, and may we say “thy will, not ours, be done.”
The funeral was conducted on Wednesday, March 3, at 1 o’clock at the Smartsburg Church by Rev. Kelly, of Jamestown, after which a large concourse of relatives and friends followed the remains to Mace, where they were laid to rest in the K. of P. Cemetery.
