Amy Watkins, daughter of George and Rebecca Watkins, was born in Montgomery County, Ohio, August 29, 1812. She united with the M. E. Church in 1830, and with her parents immigrated to this county in 1831. She married William S. White Dec. 29, 1836. They settled at the present homestead in March, 1838, and lived there 59 years. She was the mother of four boys and eight girls, of whom eight have preceded her. She was blessed with twenty one grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She departed this life on the morning of April 24, 1897, at 7:25 o’clock, aged 84 years, seven months and twenty five days.
The Watkins and White families were among the early settlers seven miles south of Crawfordsville.
Wm S., the aged husband of Aunt Amy, is about all that is left of that sturdy band of early settlers. They were brave, honest, earnest toilers. Many were their hardships and privations; but they toiled and sacrificed uncomplainingly. They laid the foundations of everything we enjoy. The Methodist Church in all that region is greatly indebted to the Watkins and White families. Aunt Amy, as everybody called her, was indeed an “elect lady.” She was regarded as the mother of the New Market M. E. Church. The funeral services were held at the home at 1 o’clock p.m. last Sunday, conducted by the Rev. L. S. Buckles of Thorntown, and the interment was made at Oak Hill in the evening, followed by a large concourse of friends.
