The sad news reached here Friday afternoon of last week of the tragic death of Horace M. White, son of Mark White at Indianapolis which occurred there at 3:30 that afternoon.  It appears that Horace who was custodian of grounds at the Deaf and Dumb Institute had finished his days work and gone for a walk; when in the act of crossing the CH&D tracks at State Street, a rapidly moving passenger train bore down upon him before he cleared the crossing and he was struck.  A large wound at the base of the skull, showed a fatal blow and he expired in a few moments without ever gaining connections.  The body was place in the baggage car of the train which backed to state street when it was removed to the ambulance and taken to the morgue, where it was identified by Superintendent Johnson of the D& D Institute. The family here was informed by telegraph when representatives went over, had the body prepared for burial and brought here Saturday. The funeral was held Sunday at 2 o’clock at the Friends Church, conducted by Dr. Bassett, assisted by Mrs. Binford, Mr. Kendall and Rev. Frazier of the Friends Church.  Superintendent Johnson delivered a most impressive eulogy on the life and character of the deceased. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful, attesting the regard of his associates.  The interment was at Sugar Plain beside his mother.  Other incidents of his life may be found in the following biographical sketch and obituary read at the service.  “Horace Maynard White was born near Sugar Plain Aug 29, 1862 and department this life March 7, 1902 aged 39 years, 6 months and 7 days.  He was the eldest child of Wm. M and Millicent C. White.  In infancy he was stricken with Spinal Meningitis which destroyed his hearing and also injured him otherwise, having never fully recovered from the effects of the dread disease.  In 1874 he entered the D&D Institute at Indianapolis as a student and was discharged in 1881 having completed his education.  In March the same year his mother to whom he was so fondly attached and whose love was reciprocated with all the tenderness of a mother for an afflicted son was taken away by death.  This blow was the more serious to him for in his affliction he always turned to her with a devotion truly pathetic.  In 1881 shortly after the death of the mother, the family removed to Thorntown where he resided until 1893 when he again entered the Institute, this time as an employee remaining there in that capacity until his tragic death last Friday. The deceased was a member of the Friends Church from birth and ever lived a pure, upright and blameless life.  He loved God and found much consolation in the promises vouchsafed in His Holy Word.  He is survived by a father, one brother and two sisters, who while mourning their loss, know that he is among the redeemed and with loved ones who have gone before.” --–kbz
