Ellen SMITH WHITACRE, daughter of Robert and Catherine FRAZIER Smith was born near Alamo, Montgomery County, Indiana May 12, 1846. When she was quite young the family moved to the vicinity of Wallace, Indiana and here she grew to womanhood and on April7, 1864,she was united in marriage to Francis M. WHITACRE and to this union 9 children were born. Three of the children preceded their mother in death, the first an infant daughter and Andrew and John both of whom grew to manhood. Soon after marriage she and her husband began housekeeping near Wallace and later moved to the vicinity of Steam Corner where they continued to reside until 10 years ago when they moved to Kingman. When a young woman she united with the Christian Church at Wallace under the pastorate of Rev. James Brant and had later placed her membership with the united Brethern Church where she continued until the end. For the past six months she had been sorely afflicted and for the last few days seriously ill and while all was done for her that could be done it was without avail for in the morning hours of August 12, she passed quietly away at the age of 76 years, and 3 months leaving to mourn an aged husband, 3 sons: Marion of Brook, Indiana; Edward of Veedersburg; Mahlon of Chicago; 3 daughters: Mrs. Eva HUDSON of Danville, Illinois ;Mrs. Rose BOWMAN of Wallace; Mrs. Zulu Johnson of Kingman, other relatives and a host of friends. A good woman has gone unto her reward, may peace be unto her departed soul. Funeral services were held at the UB Church after which the remains were laid to rest in the Rockfield Cemetery. Rev. McHargue officiated.
