Westfall - George - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

George Westfall died at the residence of his son, CC Westfall in Waynetown Thursday March 8, 1900 aged 79 years, 7 months 12 days.  He was born in Darke County, Ohio July 26, 1820. He came to Indiana when about 16 and has spent nearly his entire life in Montgomery County.  In early manhood he was married to Martha Tracy.  To this union were born six sones and one daughter, all of whom survive save the oldest son who died after reaching manhood and marriage. Mr. Westfall long owned and occupied a farm two miles south of Wingate. Some of the land was perhaps entered by himself. He united with Turkey Run (Pleasant Hill) Christian Church when a young man. The church house was built of hewn logs and located on the corner of his farm on the bank of a winding stream known as Turkey Run.  He with his wife, who was an excellent Christian woman were very much devoted to the church of their choice, attending its services without regard to weather or the environments of home or farm. They soon became pillars in the church. As the older sons were approaching manhood the mother sickened and died early in the 60s. While the church sustained a great loss in the death of this noble woman the family sustained a greater in the loss of a devoted wife and mother. After a time he was married to (Mrs) Catherine Francis, who proved to be a true helpmate in the family and in the church for she was a good Christian woman.  To this union was born one daughter. Mr. Westfall having been made deacon in the church, he and his wife were faithful in all their duties in the service of the church.  Mr. Westfall was a good farmer, industrious, frugal and hospitable. The hospitality of the Westfall house was proverbial and oftimes has this home been the home of nieces and nephews and fatherless grandchildren. The needy always found in this man and wife faithful friends. A few years ago after their declide in life they retired from the farm and moved to Wingate. Mrs. Westfall died about 4 years ago. Since that time he has lived with his children attending the old church when possible. The world has lost its charms to him and he often expressed a desire to depart and be with his Savior; yet waited patiently until his time came. He said all was well with him. He exhorted his children and his brethren to faithfulness I the Lord’s cause. His funeral was held at Pleasant Hill Church on Saturday Rev JT Phillips of Frankfort officiating assisted by Rev. Henson of the Baptist Church of Waynetown and Rev. LW Bannon who had been associated with him 40 years. Interment at Turkey Run cemetery near the cite of the old log church and one of the oldest cemeteries in the country, Mr. Westfall’s aunt being the first person buried there about 70 years ago.
