Two men died in Culver Hospital following a two-car head-on collision 2 1/2 miles west of Crawfordsville on US 136 about 10 a.m. Wednesday. Dead are Gordon D. Weber, 54, 315 S. Water St. and John Charles Beckman, 30, 514 S. 30th St, Lafayette. Police theorised that Weber was driving east and crossed the center line at an acute angle on the wet highway. The right front fender of Weber's car apparently sustained the brunt of the impact which threw Weber into the back seat. The motor of Weber's car was torn loose and landed on the east side of the road, possibly having been thrown over the deliver truck being driven west by Beckman. The truck was owned by the Continental Baking Co. Both vehicles were demolished with parts scattered on the highway. Beckman was wedged in the truck. He was pried loose and taken to the hospital where he died about 10:50. Weber, taken to the hospital in another ambulance died five minutes later. Both men reportedly suffered fractured skulls and broken limbs in the crash. A passing motorist who arrived shortly after the crash, Eileen Hopkins, Peoria, Ill said both cars were smoking when she pulled up. When she saw Beckman raise his arm, she continued, she ran to call an ambulance. Police rushed Mrs. Weber to the hospital minutes before her husband died. She appeared stunned into tearlessness when the doctor came out of the emergency room shaking his head. She said her husband, a partner in Jackson & Weber Farm Management Realtors was out taking care of some last-minute business before they were to leave for Texas to visit one of their children. Her husband, she continued had gone to Waynetown in the morning and she had begun to worry about him when the police officer arrived to take her to the hospital. Weber's body was taken to the Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown where funeral arrangements are to be announced later. Beckman's body was taken to the McCloud Funeral Home. His family came to Crawfordsville Wednesday afternoon to begin funeral arrangements. - kbz
