All that is earthly of John Weston was laid away beneath the   sod Sun. afternoon with all the ceremony and respect that an old   soldier deserves. The first part of the services were conducted   at the residence of Dr. Duncan. After a hymn by the Center Church   choir, Rev. RJ Cunningham read from the Scriptures and offered   prayer. Rev. GP Fuson made the address and after giving the main   facts of of the life of the deceased he paid a high tribute to   his character as a soldier and a citizen. After another hymn the   casket was placed on the sidewalk and the remains viewed by the   members of McPherson Post, GAR of which John Weston was a member.   The fun. procession then formed with the ministers in front,   followed by the GAR boys, the hearse and mourners. The hearse was   guarded by two platoons from Co D, one in front and other in the   rear, while on each side were the pall bearers, BF Crabbs, Cap.   CW Elmore, Maj. LA Foote, Judge E. C. Snyder, PH Burns, and THB McCain. (?) At the head of Lafayette Ave the old soldiers and   pall bearers took carriages until the gate of Cemetery was reached when the time was reformed as it was originally. At the   grave the fun. serv. of the GAR were given and Dept. Commander   Travis also made a few remarks. At the close the salute to the   dead of three guns was given. Thus was bur. John Weston, an old   man 76 years old, hundreds of miles from any relatives. He was born in Mass in 1813 and in 1861 enlisted in the 165h Mass regiment   for 3 years. After serving less than 2 he was transferred to the   invalid corps and was mustered out at the end of his time. After   the war he settled here as a shoemaker but as he grew older his   health forsook him and being unable to get a pension he went back   to Mass about a year ago and entered the Soldier's home. But soon after he obtained his needed pension and came out here to die   among his old friends. Dr. Duncan made a home for him and to the   very last cared for him like a brother. - transcribed by kbz
