Wells - Rufus
Source: Crawfordsville Daily News-Review, Crawfordsville, Montgomery County, Indiana, Jan 31, 1903
At the age of 69 years Rufus Wells gave up the
struggle at 6 o'clock this morning at his home on Haw Street and all
that is mortal of him will be laid to rest on Sunday morning at 10
o'clock at Mt. Tabor. Mr. Wells has been ill for the past year and the
announcement of his demise will occassion no surprise. He has been a
familiar character about town for the past dozen years and he will be
missed by many people. His wife died in 1890 and a large number of
children survive them. The firm of Wells & Son has been engaged in a
general transfer business and as garbage contractors and Mr. Charles
Well, the surviving partner will no doubt continue as the surviving
member of the firm, to serve the public. Mr. Wells was taken to the
county home lately but so great was his repugnance to being a charge of
the county that he left it as soon as he got a chance which happened the
following day. He was poor but proud and had the satisfaction of
knowing that he would not be buried in the potter's field. He was a man
of good mind and kindly impulses and but for one besetting fault might
have risen above many of the obstacles that hindered his way through
life. - transcribed by kbz
