Waymire - Mary Haugher Hammond

MELLOTT - Mrs. Mary Stella Haugher Waymire, 76, of Mellott died at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Alward Nursing Home in Attica where she had been a patient for one week. She was born March 28, 1892 in Henderson, Ky. She was married to Clarence Hammond in 1929 and together they operated a grocery store in Indianapolis for 18 years. The Hammonds then moved to Mellott where they operated Hammond's Grocery until his death in 1955. Mrs. Waymire married Merle Waymire in 1962 and they continued to operate the store now known as the Waymire Grocery. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge of Indianapolis. Survivors include the husband; a son, Eugene Creekmore of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren. The funeral is set for 2 p.m. Thursday at the DeSutter Funeral Home in Attica. The service will be in charge of Rev. Richard Austin, pastor of the Mellott United Church of Christ. Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Attica. Friends may call at the funeral home after 5 p.m. Wednesday. -- jlr
Source: The obituary is from a collection of newspaper (paper names not recorded) obituaries saved, by Fauniel Hershberger, during the 1950's, 60's, 70's and 80's. She was a life long resident of Fountain County Indiana. The collection is now housed at Crawfordsville District Public Library.
Funeral services for Mrs. Stella Waymire were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Desutter Funeral Home, in Attica. The Rev. Richard Austin, minister of the Mellott United Church of Christ was in charge of the services. Burial was made in the Riverside Cemetery, in Attica. The business places, in Mellott, were closed during the hour of the funeral. Pall bearers were: Dave Coffing, James Helgers, Russell Austin, Harold Bantz, Everette Allen and Russell Branan. Mrs. Waymire and her husband, Merle, owned and operated the Waymire Grocery, in Mellott. -- jlr
