Warren - Johnny "Mascot"
Source: Crawfordsville Semi-Weekly, August 13, 1887
Little Johnny Warren, the little negro dwarf, better know as "The Mascot" died Monday night after a long and serious illness. He was from birth a deformity, and was petted by everybody. When Simpson & Burk started their cigar store, they adopted Johnny and christened him and the store alike, "The Mascot." Since its purchase by Newt Miller he has still made it his headquarters, and Newt had his photograph taken in a dozen different attitudes and used them as a label for the lids of boxes containing the celebrated Mascot cigar. He was a bootblack and at playing his trade and accumulated quite a neat sum of money. Little Johnny will be missed by the frequenters of the hotels, cigar stores and Music Hall very much. - Kim H
