William Smith Ward, son of Mary and Jefferson Ward, was born in Vermilion County, Ill Jan 11, 1853. There he spent his boyhood and early life. At the age of 23 he was united in marriage to Rebecca Coonce. One child blessed this union and passed away 3 weeks before the mother's death. On Sept 28, 1882 Mr. Ward married Marietta Brown and since that time until his death has resided in Indiana. Seven children were given to this union; 3 have answered the call of death, two going in infancy and Roy in 1916. The 4 remaining are: George E. of Annapolis, Md; Ray of Hazelwood, Ind; Mrs. Bertha Chapman of Newport, Ind and Lillie who resided with her parents. There are also 7 grandchildren. Mr. Ward has been in declining health for the past 2 years with heart trouble which was the immediate cause of his death which occurred Wednesday evening, July 16, 1924 at the age of 71Y6M5D. Mr. Ward was converted in 1883 and united with the Presbyterian Church at Bethel, Ill. He later changed to the Wesleyan Methodist Church of which he was a member at death. He was a firm believer and upholder of the gospel and heartfelt religion. That he experienced this was proven in his dealings with fellowmen, his high regard for duty, his keen sense of honesty and justice and his unwavering faith in God. With such characteristics, life is full, rich and good. Such was the life of William Ward, who not only had high standards of life as his aim, but was a good neighbor and a loyal friend. he ha an unselfish devotion for his family, and was a devoted and loving father and husband. His was a life consecrated to faithful service. He, whose heart is ever tenanted with religious Hope, need fear but little from the shadows of life, for like the morning sunlight, this hope casts the shadows of our burdens behind us. His passing is not only a great loss to the heart broken wife, children and grandchildren, but the community as well. It can be truly said, that the Township has lost one of its best and most upright citizens. Funeral services . were held at the Byron Wesleyan Church on Saturday afternoon in charge of Rev. George E. W. S. Ward removed to Georgetown, Ill on Tuesday driving over. His family went by train. Miss Bertha, who is a member of the Sr. class will stay with Mrs. John Wilder until the close of school. Mr. and Mrs. Ward are well liked and much regret is felt at their removal.

W.S. Ward, who formerly lived on the Hanna farm just west of town but who is now living near Marshall received a telegram from Annapolis, MD Tuesday morning saying that his son, Roy who has been employed there as a motorman had been seriously injured. This was followed in an hour by another message saying that he was dead. The body will be brought home for burial. He was 28 years old and unmarried. With his twin brother, Ray, he served 4 years in the Navy, and has since been working in Annapolis. HIs younger brother, Elvin, was working for the same company. Ray Ward is living on a farm near Greencastle. A telegram was received yesterday saying that the body would arrive here some time this afternoon. The funeral services will be at the ME Church, probably on Saturday afternoon. Interment at Maple Ridge.
