John W. Ward, 89, of 319 S. Washington St., died at 11:37 p.m. Thursday in Culver Hospital. Mr. Ward had been superintendent of Montgomery County Schools for 28 years, beginning his service in 1929. He was elected to the post seven times. He spent 52 consecutive years teaching and serving as superintendent. Mr. Ward began his teaching career in an Alamo, Tex., school where he taught for five years. He also taught at New Ross High School for two years, served as principal of Mace High School for seven years, at Crawfordsville for nine years and at Miami. Fla. for a year. He was graduated from Alamo High School in 1905 and from Wabash College with a bachelor's degree in 1919. He received his master's degree from Indiana University in 1940. In 1957, in recognition of his 50 years of service in the field of education, Mr. Ward was honored by the Montgomery County Indiana State Teachers Alumni Association. A fund was established to aid a Montgomery County student each year in studies at Indiana State University. Mr. Ward was an elder in the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church for many years. He was a member of the Crawfordsville Kiwanis Club for more than 30 years and was a 69-year member of Montgomery Lodge 50. F & AM. He was born Aug. 7, 1886, and was married to Faye Barker on April 2, 1910. She died Dec 13, 1956. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Rachel Hunter of Wabash; two grandsons, Nelson Hunter of Lebanon and John Holmes Hunter of Evansville; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Larimore Wickett officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday. - jlr
