The mother of one of the 500-mile race’s heroes – Howard Wilcox, winner in 1919 – died yesterday at her home, 4024 College Ave. Mrs. Anna L. Warbinton, Howdy’s mother, was 75 and had been ill only a short time. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Shirley Brothers Central Chapel and burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery. The services will be conducted by Thomas E. Perine, CSB. Mrs. Warbinton, whose maiden name was DuVal was born in Cannelton, Indiana. Following the death of her first husband, Howard Wilcox, she married Benjamin Warbinton, who died 7 years ago. Her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Howard Wilcox II died in 1922 and it was a year afterward that her famous son, Howard met death in a race at Altoona, PA. Since then, Mrs. Warbinton had lived with two grandchildren, Howard Wilcox III a junior at Indiana University and Marian Wilcox a sophomore at Butler University. Mrs. Warbinton legally adopted her two grandchildren six years ago. She also is survived by a son, Harry Warbinton of Indianapolis. The great grandfather of Mrs. Warbinton, William DuVal was appointed by President Monroe as Governor of Florida while that part of the Union was still a territory and was reappointed by Presidents Adams and Jackson. A member of the Second Church of Christ Scientist, the Order of Eastern Star and the WRC, Mrs. Warbinton also had been active in PTA work at School 66 and Shortridge HS.
