Just as we were going to press last week we received a letter from Prof. Geo. L. Guy, of E. Las Vegas, New Mexico telling of the death of Mrs. Guy's mother, Mrs. Nannie Wells, on Saturday April 12. Mrs. Wells is well known here, having lived here for a number of years. She was born in Sullivan County near Sullivan, February 20, 1836. She was the daughter of John and Mahala Cuppy. Shortly before the Civil War she married James A. Walls. Mr. Walls enlisted in the army and rose to the rank of captain. To them were born five children, of whom three are living, William, Edgar and Mrs. Estella Guy. Mr. Walls, who was a merchant in Sullivan died May 27, 1882, since which time she has made her home with Mrs. Guy. She was an active member of the M. E. Church. When she was over seventy years old, she entered and perfected the title to a quarter section of land in New Mexico. Her death was not unexpected, as her health had been poor for some time. Funeral services were conducted by the pastors of the M. E. and Presbyterian Churches, and the body was interred in the Masonic Cemetery at Las Vegas by the side of her grandchildren, James and Pearl Guy. Mrs. Walls was a sister of S. E. Cuppy of this place, James Cuppy of Terre Haute, Mrs. Elizabeth Turner of Middletown and Mrs. M. J. Kirkham of Wheeler, Ill., She was also a sister of the late Rev. Wm. T. Cuppy. - kbz
