Dr. H. C. Wallace, 78, a surgeon on the staff at Culver Hospital from 1935 to 1963, died at 3 a.m. Wednesday at his residence, 107 W. Jefferson St. His death followed an extended illness. After retiring as a surgeon, Dr. Wallace was plant physician at R. R. Donnelley and Sons Co. here from Jan. 1, 1964, to Oct. 29, 1965. Dr. Wallace was a veteran of both World Wars and in WW II served as chief surgeon at U.S. Army evacuation hospitals in Africa, Italy, Austria and France. He was promoted to colonel in 1946. Dr. Wallace was graduated in 1921 from Rush Medical College, now a part of Northwestern University. He took his residency in surgery at Chicago's Lutheran Deconess Hospital from 1923 to 1926. Dr. Wallace was an instructor in surgery at the University of Illinois medical school from 1926 to 1935. He was certified in his speciality by the American Board of Surgeons. Born July 13, 1891, in Belfontaine, Ohio, Dr. Wallace was the son of Archibald Collins Wallace and Mary Hawthorne Wallace. He married Lela Colescott on April 10, 1917. They observed their 50th wedding anniversary in 1967. Dr. Wallace was a member of the First United Methodist Church and had served on its official board. He also was a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, the Montgomery County Medical Society, the Crawfordsville Rotary Club and Byron Cox Post No. 72, The American Legion. Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Joanna McConaughy of Northeast, Pa., and Mrs. Laura Keefe of St. Paul, Minn.; one son, Dr. Collins R. Wallace of Fort Wayne, and 11 grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hunt and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Frank Little officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Thursday.
