CRAWFORDSVILLE — Merle L.
Verden, 87, Crawfordsville, formerly of Warren County, died at 9:40 a.m.
Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Lafayette. He was born
Jan. 26, 1919 in Marshfield, the son of Thomas Agusta and Bessie (Ewen) Verden.
He was married to Mary K. Verden, who survives. He was a 1936 graduate of West
Lebanon High School. He was a Warren County resident until serving in the U. S.
Army during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theatre and had resided in
Crawfordsville since 1980. He received a bachelor of science degree in
mechanical engineering from Purdue University in 1950. He worked as mechanical
engineer in various areas of the United States. He was a member of the Dover
Christian Church and the China-Burma-India Veterans Association. He enjoyed
carpentry and furniture making. Survivors, besides the wife, include: four sons
and a daughter from a previous marriage, Thomas (Linda) Verden, Fort Worth,
Texas, Paul (Laura) Verden, Wheaton, Ill., Karl (Patricia) Verden,
Fredericksburg, Va., Scott Verden, Hampton, Va., and Jo Ellen Verden, Adelaide,
Australia; a sister, Mildred Verden, Marshfield; five grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Rae
Verden; and two sisters, Ester Metcalf and Marie Randles. Visitation will be
from 9 a.m. until service time at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) in Dover Christian
Church with Pastors Jerry Imes and John Mills officiating. Burial will be in
West Lebanon Cemetery with full military honors. Grady Funeral Home,
Williamsport, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family
requests that donations be made to the Dover Christian Church Building Fund or
donor of one's choice. – jlr
