Source: Crawfordsville Review Saturday April 29, 1916
New Market, April 28 -- Sylvester, 18-month old son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace VAUGHT was burned to death when his clothing caught fire from a bonfire which his mother had built to burn some trash. The accident occurred this morning about 8:30 and the child died about 11. Mrs. Vaught had been burning some trash while cleaning the yard . While she was away from the fire the child slipped from the house and began paying around the flames. His clothing caught fire and his brother Wilson came running to his mother saying the baby was burning up. The mother rushed to the assistance of the suffering child and tried to smother the flames with her clothing. She arrived too late, however to do any real good. All his clothing was in flames and he was badly burned about the body. The mother picked the child up and carried him into the house. Dr. Wolfe was called and responded at once. The physician remained at the home working over the child until his death which occurred about 11. Mrs. Vaught was almost prostrated with grief over the awful accident to her child and while everyone worked valiantly to save his life, nothing could be done. He is survived by his parents and his 4-year-old brother Wilson who first discovered the accident. The funeral will be held form the home Sunday morning at 9 and burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Parke Co.
