Vaught - Maxwell

A Waveland man, his head virtually severed was found in his automobile by Cecil Dove of Waveland 5:30 a.m. Sunday on Highway 234 about a mile and a half east of Highway 47. He was taken to the Culver Hospital where he died at 9:11 a.m. He was employed by the Russellville Stone Company. Max, born Sept 23, 1925, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil VAUGHT of Greene Twp. Vaught served 3 years as a Navy radioman during WWII and was recalled as a reservest in 1951 when he served 16 months and saw action in Korea. He was awarded the following medals: WW Victory Medal; Atlantic Pacific Theater Medal; Phillipine Liberation Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. There survive the parents, a paternal grandfather, JH Vaught, Greene Twp, two brothers, Rex, Greene Twp, and Donald, US Army and a sister, Mrs. Henry Merrill, Vallejo, California. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at Vaught Home with the Rev. Ray Britton official, burial in Seceder Cemetery.

Weekend traffic crashes took the lives of two persons and injured several others in this vicinity. Dead are Simon Stetler, 35 of Independence and Max R. Vaught, 27 of Waveland ... Vaught died in Culver Hospital at 9 a.m. Sunday after being injured a few hours earlier on state road 234 one mile west of 47 in southern Montgomery County. State Police said the victim, travelling alone, apparently fell asleep at the wheel, his car hitting a culvert.
