Bertie Lee Van Horn was born Oct. 1, 1870, became of member of the Christian Church at New Ross in his thirteenth year, graduated from the common schools May 18, died February 14, 1890. In the relations of life, Bertie was an exemplary young man. It seems but yesterday that we greeted him at school and received the invariably pleasant response. Though he did not live long, he lived well. Though he did no get to accomplish what he desired, yet his intention indicated his character. He had chosen the avocation of his father, that of teaching, but was stricken down by the hand of death before entering upon his chosen pursuit. In the removal of Bertie from us society loses one of its main stays; the church, a sincere and constant member; the Sunday School, a faithful and efficient teacher; his schoolmates, an energetic, faithful co-worker; his associates, a friendly elevating companion; his family, a comfort and consolation. He was a friend in adversity, a temperate sharer of prosperity. Thought not afraid to die, he loved life for the opportunities which if afforded for developing character. Thought removed from us, he has not completely left us. His influence will be left many years, a “footprint on the sands of time.” Imagining himself at school, one of his latest remarks was “I am sick, I must go home.” He has gone home, indeed, where there is no sickness.
