Simon P. Vangundy was born May 13, 1850, departed this life Feb. 10, 1902, age 51 years, 8 months and 27 days. He was married to Ella Barnhart Johnson, May 27, 1878. He had the misfortune of losing his father in boyhood, when boys most need a father’s counsel, thus leaving him largely to fight life’s battles alone. He early in life sought Christ and found in Him a true counselor in all the conflicts of life, and in his last struggle for life he said to his pastor that if it were not for Christ he could not endure the suffering. But he bore his sufferings patiently, waiting for death’s relief. He united with the Garfield Christian Church soon after its organization and remained one of its warmest supporters till God called him to join the church triumphant. The funeral occurred Feb. 12, 1902, at the Garfield Christian Church, services being conducted by Rev. T. Woody, assisted by Rev. Brown, of Darlington. Interment was at Friends’ Cemetery at Darlington. -s
