Vancleave - Thomas Lindsay

Thomas Lindsay Van Cleave, retired minister, died at his home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock following a prolonged illness. He had been a resident of Atlanta for many years and, was forced to retire from the ministry eight years ago when his health failed. The funeral will be conducted from the Atlanta Christian Church Friday afternoon. The Rev. Mr. VanCleave was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, Nov. 11, 1858, and Spent his early life on a farm there. After attending Central Normal school at Danville, III., and Valparaiso university, he engaged in teaching school, but a few years later gave up the profession to enter the ministry. After attending the Bible college at Lexington, Ky., for two years, he entered Butler college and graduated with the class of 1884. He entered evangelism work for a year after leaving college, and then accepted a pastorate of a Christian church in Lincoln, Neb. He also filled a pulpit in Omaha. Neb., and later went to Wichita, Kas., following which he accepted a call to the Christian church in Bloomington. Ind., where he served three years. He moved from Bloomington to Atlanta. Mr. Van Cleave was well known throughout the state for his activity in the work of the Prohibition party. He was a candidate for various state offices on the Prohibition ticket on several occasions. Surviving are the widow; four daughters, Mrs. Jean Powers, Denver, Col., Miss Helen Van Cleave of Elkhart. Ind., and Misses Mabel and Ruth Van Cleave, of Atlanta; three sons, Robert and Walton, of Gary, Ind., and Joseph, of Atlanta - kbz
