Vancleave - Matilda

Matilda Evaline VanCleave was born September 26, 1865, the daughter of Aaron and Lucinda Taylor VanCleave, and passed away April 4, 1943, age 77 years, 6 months 4 days. In her girlhood she made her confesion to her savior at the Salem Baptist Church southwest of Crawfordsville and later changed her membership to the Brown's Valley Baptist Church. At the deat of her mother, Eva (as she was always called), only a young girl, took over the duties of a homemaker for her father and young brothers. Her life was spent doing for her family and others. She was well loved and will be missed by her relatives, friends and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William; two sisters, Carolyn, who died in infancy, and Nancy Ann. She leaves behind two brothers, Levi Reese VanCleave of Browns' Valley and Charlie Grant VanCleave of New Market; two nieces, Mrs. Richard Fendley of Ladoga and Mrs. Elmer Sanders of New Market; three nephews, George VanCleave of Wahpeton, NC; Paul VanCleave of LaMinta, Calif; and Levi VanCleave of Chicago, Ill; several great nieces and nephews. The funeral of Matilda Evaline VanCleave who died at Culver Hospital Sunday, April 4 was held from Noble Reeves Funeral Home at New Market Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Esmond Elliott. Burial was made in the Old Hickory cemetery. Mrs. CL Airhart played several organ selections. Pall bearers were Walter Penn, Hessie Boles, McKinley Buroff, Ben Cornell, Clayde Patton and Jack Sanders. Flower bearers were ROmelia Sanders, Charles Sanders, John Sanders and Charles Galey.
