Vancleave - Katharine Coons

Mrs. Katherine VanCleave, well known resident of the county, passed away at her daughter's, Mrs. DC Moore of Waynetown; on Tuesday night at 12 o'clock following an illness of 16 months. Mrs. Vancleave's death resulted from the infirmities of age and complications The veteran resident of the county was born May 28, 1836 the daughter of John and Mary Bruner Vancleave (Note from typist - Karen Zach -- she was a Coons, NOT a Vancleave but married to a Vancleave -- her parents are John and Mary Bruner Coons). In April 1855, she was united in marriage with Ralph Vancleave and to this union 12 children were born, 7 sons and 5 daughters. Mrs. Vancleave resided southwest of Crawfordsville. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church. In 1885 she moved to Elmdale and in 1896 to Wingate where her husband passed away in 1903. Those surviving are John Vancleave of Wingate ; Mrs. Mary E. Coons of near Crawfordsville; Mrs. Anna Goff of New Richmond; Mrs. DC Moore of Waynetown; HT Vancleave of Lawrence Ind and George Vancleave of Chicago. 8 grandhcilren and 12 great survive. Short funeral services will be held from the home of the daughter in Waynetown Friday morning at 9:30 with a second service at the Christian Church in Wingate at 10:30. Rev. Corenlius Airhart will be in charge of service. Burial in Wingate.

Grandma VanCleave, aged mother of Mrs. D.C. Moore, passed away Tuesday night at midnight after a long illness covering a period of several months during which she was in a state of gradual decline from the infirmities of age. She had made her home here with Mrs. Moore since her illness begun, and had had every tender and watchful care that love could administer throughout her long illness. Catherine Vancleave was the daughter of John and Mary Bruner Vancleave (incorrect - John and Mary Bruner COONS) and was born in this county southwest of Crawfordsville. Here it was she grew to womanhood, and April 17, 1853 she was united in marriage to Ralph VanCleave and to which union 12 children were born. Following her marriage she and her husband went to housekeeping in the neighborhood where she was born, where they continued to live until 1885, when they moved to Elmdale. Leaving the farm they lived in Waynetown for a short time, finally moving to Wingate in 1896 where her husband passed away a few years after. In early life she united with the Primative Baptist Church and continued a faithful member of that church througout the long years to the end of her life's journey. Grandma VanCleave had lived a long and useful life her 88 years 8 months and 6 days of life, having covered a period in the history of this world. She was truly a good woman, one of those good old fashioned mothers, devoted to her home and family and to the good of everyone about her and her life will continue to be a sweet rememberance to relatives and friends. She is survived by three sons and three daughters, John VanCleave of Wingate; H.T. Vancleave of Lawrence, Ind; George VanCleave of Chicago; Mrs. Mary E. Coons of Crawfordsville; Mrs. Anna Goff of New Richmond and Mrs. Emma Moore of this place. There are also 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. A short funeral service will be held here this morning at the home at 9:30 o'clock when the remains will be taken to Wingate where a second service will be held at the Wingate Christian Church at 10:30 in charge of Rev. Cornelius Airhart. Interment will be made at the Wingate cemetery.
