Joseph W. VanCLEAVE, son of John P. and Marjorie Jane VanCleave was born near New Market, Indiana Jan 13, 1849 and died in the Presbyterian sanitarium at Albuquerque, NM May 3, 1916, age 67 years. Nine years of his childhood was spent in Iowa when the family returned to the old home in Indiana where the family lived until 1903 when he moved with his family to New Mexico. On May 4, 1881 he was married to Susan Catherine BOWERS. His wife, two sons, Errett and Otto and two grandchildren, Marjorie Jane and Effie Catherine survive him in New Mexico also two brothers, James W. Vancleave of New Ross, Indiana nad LF Vancleave of Meeker, Colorado, two sisters, Mrs. Martah Denny of Valonia, ind and Mrs. Sarah Terry of Ada, Montana. In Feb 1879 he confessed his faith in Christ and united with the Christian Church at New Market where he was an active and helpful worker and continued faithful until death for more than 30 years. He transferred his membership toNew Mexico and was one of the charter members of the church there. He served there as an elder and trustee until the time of his death. The last church service he was able to attend was in October of 1915 when the new $10,000 church was dedicated which he helped to make possible for the small congregation there to build by his generous financial help. The beautiful flowers which were constantly sent to his room at the hospital for 7 long weeks and the many that were massed around his casket were but small compared to the loving thoughts and many kindnesses shown him by the church as a whole and his friends outside. A few years ago he moved to the mesa east of the city and was a leader in development work on the mesa. His ranch was one of the show places around and proud indeed he was for tourists from the beautiful country of California to motor out to his place to see the young orchard and talk to him of his plans for cultivation and development of the mesa. He will be remembered around New Market as a lumberman and pump manufacturer; having been engaged in business there for a number of years. He was one of the original founders of the town of New Market and the last one living. During his last ilness his thought were back in Indiana with the people he knew so well and had planned to spend the coming summer there among them.
