Vancleave - Clara Clements

Mrs. Clara Ellen VanCleave, 73, operator of the VanCleave Nursing Home for the past 15 years, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday at Culver Hospital. Mrs. Vancleave had been ill since February. She became seriously sick and was taken to the hospital Saturday. Death was due to a cerebral hemorrhage. Born Sept 20, 1878, near Jamestown, she was the daughter of Andrew S. and Carrie Clements. She was married at Thorntown December 6, 1900 to Harry A. Vancleave who survives. Mrs. Vancleave was well known in this community. For 9 years she was matron of the Children's Home. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church. Earlier in life, she had been active in the work of the Smartsburg Christian and Memorial Presbyterian churches. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors, the Suburban stitchers and Women's Relief Corps. In addition to the husband, the survivors include a son, Hugh R. VanCleave; two daughters, Mrs. Richard Korty and Mrs. Richard Williams; a brother, Ray Clements; a half-brother, John Clements; a half sister, Mrs. John Barnhill, and 7 grandchildren, Raymond VanCleave, John, Nancy and Douglas Korty; Max A Cowan, Frederick Cowan and Esther Cowan. Funeral services will be held at Hunt & Son Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Rev. HH Elmore will be in charge with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home at 6 p.m. Tuesday. - kbz
