Fred C. Utterback, former manager of the Ben Hur Home died at 3 a.m. Friday at his home, 203 E. College. He had been in failing health since suffering an injury in a fall at Mills School in Jan 1954. The mishap occurred while he was working at the school. A native of Montgomery County, Mr. Utterback was born near New Richmond, son of J.W. and Martha Miller Utterback. He married Leora L. Petro Feb 23, 1897. The couple began housekeeping near New Richmond. Mr. Utterback operated a restaurant in Waynetown from 1924-1933. For the next 5 years he was associated with a son-in-law in the restaurnat business at Bloomington. He was appointed manager of the Ben Hur Home in 1939, a position he held until 1946. Mr. Utterback was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church. He also was a 50-year member of Waynetown K of P lodge. Surviving are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Gretchen Swank of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Silvon Meyer of Bloomington; a brother, Clayton Utterback also of Crawfordsville; two sons Harold Utterback of Ft. Wayne and Thomas Utterback of Crawfordsville; four grandchildren and 3 great. He was preceded in death by a sister, 3 brothers and a grandson. The grandson, Rex Swank was killed in November 1943 while serving with the armed forces. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunda at Bright Funeral Home, followed by burial at Waynetown Masonic Cemetery.
