Wingate - Ben Utterback, 69-year-old prominent businessman in this community for many years died at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday in Culver Hospital at Crawfordsville. He had been seriouly ill since June 13 when he suffered a stroke. He had been hospitalized since June 14. Mr. Utterback was in the poultry business 32 years until his retired 3 years ago. The business was started by a grandafther and continued by his father. A resident of this community most of his life, he was born Dec 29, 1892 in Coal Creek Township, son of Sanford and Belle Rhodhamel Utterback. He was married in 1922 to Alta Stockdale. They were married in Rockport, Ill. He was educated in the WIngate schools and was a WWI Veteran. Mr. Utterback was a member of the Town Board, Building & Loan Assn; American Legion Post 174, Masonic Lodge 306, K of P Lodge and Christian Church. He was a former director in the old Farmers & Merchants Bank, now known as Wingate Branch of the First National Bank of Crawfordsville. Survivors include his wife; two nieces, Mrs. Fernetta bailey of Danville, Ill; and Mrs. Annabelle Mahorney of Milwaukee; and 3 nephews, Dorsey, Robert and Carl Williams, all of Danville, Ill. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Grace Williams. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Servies Funeral Home in Waynetown, Rev. John Landon pastor of the Wingate Methodist Church will officiate. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery here. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Wednesday.
