Mrs. Lena Nixon Travis, aged 40 years, wife of the Rev. C. Claude Travis of the Wayne Street ME Church died at 6:05 o’clock Sunday evening after a five months’ illness of heart disease. She had been very low for over a week and in that time all hope of her recovery had been given up. Mrs. Travis herself realized that the end was near and with her husband had planned for the care of her two little daughters and for her funeral services. Working with the Rev. Mr. Travis day after day, Mrs. Travis was a power in the church and shared with her husband the labor and the burdens of the pastorate. In her church work she became widely known throughout the city and was one of the best loved women in all of Fort Wayne. She was a member of the Travelers’ Club of the Duo Decimo club of the AOO of St. Cecilia Circle of the King’s Daughers and of all the missionary and aid societies of the church. Born in Newport, RI, May 8, 1874 Mrs. Travis was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. RH Nixon of that city and spent the early years of her life there. She spent two years at Coates College in Terre Haute where she met Mr. Travis and they were married in October 1900 while Mr. Travis was pastor of St. Paul’s Methodist Church at Indianapolis. From Indianapolis they moved to South Bend where they remained four years and from there were called to Mishawaka where they lived until coming here in 1908. Mrs. Tavis is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mary Louise and Josephine, aged 7 and 5; two brothers, Burnett and Victor Nixon; two sisters, Mrs. UG Galloway and Mrs. OD Davis with whom the children have been living since Mrs. Travis was taken seriously ill and the father, RH Nixon, of Newport. Short funeral services will be held at the Wayne Street ME Church at 2:30 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, the Rev JA Beatty officiating and Wednesday morning the body will be removed to Mrs. Travis’ old home at Newport, where services will be held. Interment will be made in the family cemetery at that place. – kbz
