VEEDERSBURG, Ind. -- Ben Townsend, 57, a resident of 612 N. Walnut, Veedersburg died about 6 a.m. today (Feb. 16, 1968) at his desk at the Hillsboro Grain Co. He had been employed there as manager since 1952. Death was attributed to a heart attack by Coroner Robert B. Shelby. He had not been ill previously. Mr. Townsend was born Aug. 28, 1910 in Veedersburg, the son of Noah and Grace Reister Townsend. He was married to Ruby Furr Dec. 31, 1926. Surviving are the widow; two sons, Loran with the U. S. Army in Ft. Lewis, Wash., and Daryl of Indianapolis; two daughters, Mrs. Lorna Rusk of Veedersburg and Mrs. Dorla Hartsaw of Indianapolis; five brothers, John of Lafayette, Fred of Rensselaer, and Joe, Robert and Virgil, all of Covington, and 10 grandchildren. Mr. Townsend was a member of the Veedersburg EUB Church where he served as an usher and was president of the board of trustees. He was also a director of the Fountain-Warren Bi-County Chamber of Commerce, the Hillsboro Booster Club, the Hillsboro Volunteer Fire Department, the Tri-County Fire Department, and the Indiana Firemen's Association. VEEDERSBURG -- Ben E. Townsend, prominent Veedersburg resident, was found dead at 6:30 a.m. Friday at the Hillsboro Grain Co. Townsend, 57, was a partner in the firm and also its manager. He had left his home at 612 N. Walnut St. for Hillsboro just about an hour before. The deceased was active in the affairs of both Veedersburg and Hillsboro. He was vice president of the Hillsboro Boosters Club and a member of that town's volunteer fire department. He was also affiliated with the Tri-County Fire Department and the Indiana Firemen's Association. In Veedersburg, Townsend was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and also served his church, the First Evangelical United Brethren, as president of the Board of Trustees. A son of Noah and Grace Reister Townsend, he was born on Aug. 28, 1910 in Veedersburg. He was married on Dec. 31, 1926 to Ruby Furr who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Army Spec. 5 Loren Townsend of Ft. Lewis, Wash. and Daryel Townsend of Indianapolis; two daughters, Mrs. Lorna Rusk of Veedersburg and Mrs. Dorla Hartsaw of Indianapolis; five brothers, John of Lafayette, Fred of Rennselaer and Joe, Robert and Virgil all of near Covington, and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services are at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the First EUB Church here, with Rev. Ivan Steed officiating and burial in Bonebrake Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Saturday. VEEDERSBURG -- Services for Ben E. Townsend were held at the First Evangelical United Brethren Church of Veedersburg. Rev. Ivan Steed officiated. Pallbearers were Charles Shade, Marvin Crumley, Ernest Jahnke, John Chatt, Bob Shoaf and Cash Keeling. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Summers, Emmett Dodson, Ralph Nelson, Paul Mann, Clyde Reed and Glen Holt. Interment was in Bonebrake Cemetery at Veedersburg. --typed by Walt W
