Tolbert - John

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 20 November 1896

Yesterday John Tolbert, aged 87 years, was taken to the poor house and while he awaited conveyance he told a rather sad story.  He stated that he was born in Kentucky but came to Montgomery County nearly fifty years ago. During most of this time he lived in Brown Township. About a year ago he left his home in the Garland neighborhood and went to live with his stepson, John Kline, at Waveland. He states he took considerable property with him and really kept Kline going for several months. When the meat and goods which he brought were exhausted, however, Kline turned against him. Mrs. Tolbert sided with her son and between them they made it so disagreeable for the old man that he was obliged to leave. He declares that they were especially incensed against him for not voting as they wished him to. Finally all his worldly goods were dumped into an old sack and he was sent off to the poor house. -s
