OBITUARY
One by one the good old mothers are passing away. One by one the chairs at the fireside are made vacant by the death of a sainted mother. One by one green mounds are added to the old burying ground by the departure from this earth of those whose love for their dear ones never grows cold.
We are called upon today to record the death of a most excellent wife, mother, sister, neighbor and friend, Mrs. J. C. Todd.
Sarah Frances Mitchell, daughter of Alfred and Samantha Deere Mitchell, was born in Brown township, on Jan. 2, 1840. She was married, Sept. 9, 1857, to James C. Todd, with whom she lived in happy companionship for more than 52 years.
She died from the effects of an internal cancer, Monday, Oct. 25, at 5 p. m., in her 70th year, at her home on West Jennison street. After her marriage she united with the Primitive Baptist church, and was a firm believer in all its teachings.
Mr. and Mrs. Todd's married life was an ideal one — one born of heaven. They shared each other's joys and sorrows in such a manner that what was one's joy was the other's, and likewise with the sorrows. They lived on a farm in the Freedom neighborhood until about eight years ago, when they rented their farm and came to town. Mr. and Mrs. Todd were the parents of nine children. One died in infancy; Alfred J. died at Ladoga two years ago; Frank died in 1895. The remaining children are Mrs. Mary A. Glenn, of Shelburn; Mrs. Susie Whittington, of Crawfordsville; Mrs. Sophia J. Carter, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Hattie Seybold, of Dana; Joe L. Todd, of Waveland, and Robert E., of Crawfordsville. Besides numerous friends and relatives, she leaves the following sisters: Mrs. Serepta Thorn, Anna Connors, Jennie Blake and Mattie Canine.
Mrs. Todd though not vigorous in health, was very industrious, self-sacrificing and ever thoughtful of others. Even while in the throes of death this beautiful trait of character never wavered. She at all times wanted something done that would please and make others happy.
Her beautiful life has been so exemplified by her children that each of them bear testimony of her careful training and example and are all useful men and women today.
If kind deeds and loving care is to be regarded in the great beyond certainly these children's paths will be strewn with flowers, as the evening shades gather around them, for the tender care they bestowed upon their dear old mother.
The sympathy of the community goes out to the family and especially to the aged husband, who feels the loss most keenly.
"Rest, rest, darling mother,
And still be our guide,
Till we reach your abode
And are all by your side.
Where joys and pleasures
Reign day after day;
Where pain is unknown
And all tears wiped away."
The funeral occurred at old Union church, near Waveland, Wednesday at 11 a. m., conducted by Rev. J. H. Oliphant. Interment took place in the cemetery near by.
