George Edward Toby, 71, of Rt. 7, a World War I veteran, died at 8:20 a.m. Friday in Culver Hospital where he had been a patient for 10 days. Mr. Toby served in World War I in the Medical Corp and was a member of the Ladoga World War I Barracks. He was an employe of the Lewis-Shepard Co. in Crawfordsville before turning to farming as an occupation. He retired from active farm work several years ago. Born in Vermillion County on Sept. 27, 1893, he was the son of James and Hattie Lopp Toby. He married Mabel E. Lewellen. Mr. Toby was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, who died in infancy. Survivors include the widow; a son, Lewis J. of San Diego, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. James Martin of Rt. 7, Lafayette, and Miss Irene Toby at home; four sisters, Mrs. Marie Lewin of Covington, Mrs. Bertha Kelly of Danville, Ill., Mrs. Mildred Ottinger of Cayuga and Mrs. Inez Keller of Augusta, Ark., and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Powers Funeral Home in Crawfordsville. Rev. Darrell Luther of the Crawfordsville First Nazarene Church will officiate. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Saturday.
