Prof. Samuel Steel Thompson (sic) died Monday morning at 8 o'clock. He was first troubled with his heart some few months ago and on May 7 was taken down with derangement of the heart, which finally caused his death. Prof. Thompson was born April 22, 1817 at Springdale, Hamilton County, Ohio, and was therefore 86 years old last April. He was one of the 12 students who met Prof. Caleb Mills on Dec 3, 1833, being the opening day of Wabash College. He graduated from Wabash in 1889 (sic) in the 2nd senior class of the college. He is the last of his class. While in college he developed remarkable speaking qualities, and was a very eloquent preacher until he became troubled with catarrh of the throat. His first wife whom he married June 3, 1845, was the adopted daughter of Mr. Israel Williams of Terre Haute, a brother-in-law of Chauncey Rose of the same city. She died April 29, 1854. He had three children by his first wife, two of whom are dead. The other one is Mrs. Katie Ristine, wife of Theodore H. Ristine of Crawfordsville. He married his second wife, Mary B. Allen, daughter of Dr. James Allen of Rockville, August 8, 8155. His children by his present wife are: Mrs. Eva McCarer, wife of C.H. McCarer of Indianapolis; Mrs. Caroline McLane, wife of John S. McLane, of Topeka, KS; Dr. George A. Thomson of Chicago; Robert S, a member of the Junior class at Wabash College; Miss Mary P, member of the Freshman class at Wellesley, Mass. Professor Thomson graduated from the Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati in 1843 and soon afterwards he became pastor of the Delphi, Ind Presbyterian Church at which place he was very successful in his ministerial duties. In 1846 he was appointed Latin professor in Wabash College which position he has held ever since to the entire satisfaction of all. He was just completing his 39th year as Latin professor. In 1879 he succeeded Professor Mills as librarian of the college. He had made a very extended and complete catalog of the library and knew just where to find any of the 23,000 volumes therein. Two of his children, Mrs. McLane and Miss Mary, did not arrive at home before the death of their father. The funeral occurred Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Services at the house by Dr. JF Tuttle. Interment at Oak Hill.
