Joseph Tinsley,  was born in Shelby Co KY March 13, 1818 and died March 8, 1897  consequently he lacked 5 days of being 79 years old. He was married 3  times and was the father of 5 daughters, all having died in infancy but  one, Mrs. S. A. Layson, who is left to mourn his loss. He has six living  grandchildren, all married but two and 8 great grands. He was a member  of the Christian Church at New Market but did not get to go to church  very often on account of his age and deafness. He said he could not hear  well enough to understand what the preacher siad so he stayed at home  and read. He has read the bible and Testament through a number of times.  He was a great reader of the news and not being able to go about and  get the news he depended on the papers. He was a true Republican and GAR  man and old soldier, having served in the late war 3 years 3 months. He  was in a great many severe battles in the South and at Perryville came  near being mortally wounded and it was there that he received a strained  hip in helping to carry his dead captain from the battle field from  which he never recovered and for which he received a pension. He was a  great andloving father, a good neighbor. He had many friends who will be  sorry to hear of his death for none knew him but what respected him for  he was agreeable and it was pleasant to be in his company. He was  buried by the GAR in Masonic Cemetery at Crawfordsville and there was  quite a number of them turned out on that occasion which showed the  respect they had for him as a brother comrade. -k

Joseph Tinsley, veteran of the late war, died at his home SW of the city on Monday morning, (March 4) aged 79 years. His funeral was at the Christian Church under charge of the GAR on Tuesday morning - transcribed by kbz)
