Source: New Richmond Record 13 Aug 1914 p 1

Herman Thompson, 24 years old, was drowned in a gravel pit pond just east of Waynetown at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon. Mr. Thompson and three lads named Williams, Blacker and Bolen went to the pond early in the afternoon. None of them undressed but all were wading about in the shallow water at the edge of the pit. Thompson ventured farther out, and his companions were startled by his cry for help. The boys gave the alarm and a crowd soon gathered. After being in the water twenty-five minutes the body was brought to the shore and an hour’s hard effort at resuscitation was all in vain. He was an honest, and industrious young man." He leaves a wife to whom he was married three years ago; also his parents and three brothers, his father being James Thompson of Waynetown. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, the interment being made in the Wesley cemetery. – kbz
