Darlington – Damon C. Thompson, 67, retired rural mail carrier and former postmaster died in his sleep early Saturday at his home here. Born here Jan 12, 1897, he was a son of Lynn Curtis and Effie Booher Thompson. He was married to Gertrude Irene Gray Aug 5, 1918 in Darlington. She died Oct 14, 1961. He was graduated from Darlington HS. Mr. Thompson owned the Standard Garage and also operated a Ford Dales agency here. He became postmaster in 1938. His retirement as a rural carrier was in 1960. He also managed the Gray Farms. Mr. Thompson was a member of the Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge 186 and American Legion all of Darlington and the Rural Carriers association and Montgomery County Farm Bureau. He was a World War I veteran. Survivors include a son, Thomas C. Thompson of Darlington and of the Crawfordsville HS faculty; a daughter, Mrs. James Tharp of New Augusta; a sister, Mrs. Beatrice D. Mullen of Crawfordsville; a brother, Norman Thompson of Sarasota, Fla and three grandchildren. Funeral services are announced for 2 p.m. .Tuesday at the Bright Funeral Home in Darlington. Rev. Robert Hansen, pastor of the Methodist Church here will officiate and interment will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home. - kbz
