Wingate - Mrs. Bertha H. Thompson, a retired Montgomery and Fountain County school teacher, died Thursday night at Culver Hospital where she had been a patient since she fractured her hip in June. She was 86. Mrs. Thompson taught at Wingate, Alamo, Elmdale and Hillsboro. She also taught for four years at Jirch College in Wyoming. She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Christian Church here, the Dorothy Q Chapter of DAR and Montgomery County Chorus. She was a graduate of Union Christian College and attended Indiana University. Mrs. Thompson was born Nov 26, 1877 just northeast of Wingate at the home in which she lived until her death. She was married Dec 26, 1913 to Ray M. Thompson in Wyoming. She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Miss Mary Hormell. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Garna Cheek of Rt. 1, Wingate; two sisters, Miss Eulala Hormell of Wingate and Mrs. Edith Owens of Carmel; several nieces and nephews. A son-in-law, Richard Cheek and a brother, Dr. Oren C. Hormell of Brunswick, ME also survive. Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Pleasant HIll Christian Church with Rev. Leroy Houk, a former minister of the church officiating. Friends may call at the Servies Funeral Home at Waynetown after 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Pleaant Hill Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to lie in state prior to the service. - transcribed by kbz

WINGATE—Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha Thompson were held Sunday afternoon at the Pleasant Hill Christian Church. Rev. Leroy Houk, a former pastor of the church, officiated. Mrs. Estel Cheek, organist accompanied Mrs. Ruth Cunningham and Mrs. Carlos Goode, who sang "Face To Face," "Nearer My God To Thee" and "Sweet Bye and Bye." Carrying the flowers were Mesdames Avery Merrell, Carroll Irvin, Gould Kennedy, Glenn Murdock, Myrtle Johnson, Emory Gardner, Wayne Heckman, Wiley Robbins, R. E. Hays, Carl Jones, Paul Fulwider, Mabel Shanklin and Anna Stout. Pallbearers were Estel Cheek, Wayne Heckman, Carl Jones, Carlos Goode Sr., Harold Oxley, Lawrence Hays, Wiley Robbins and Alton Hays Sr. Interment was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.
