Wednesday morning at 10 minutes before 4 o'clock, Mrs. Rebecca Thomas died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Essick on Wabash Avenue. The funeral service was conducted at Mrs. Essick's home by Dr. J.F. Tuttle Thursday morning at 9:30 o'clock and in the afternoon the body was taken to Attica for interment. The services there were conductec by Rev. Wilmer (?) of the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Thomas' maiden name was Rebecca Duy and she was born in Philadelpia June 29, 1809. She was then raised and educated marrying Horatio J. Thomas in 1829. In 1830 they removed to Indiana settling at Williamsport where they remained for many years. Twelve children were born to them, 5 of whom still live, Judge A. D. Thomas; C.L. Thomas and Mrs. Essick of Crawfordsville; E.D. Thomas of St. Paul, Minn and Mrs. Finney of Attica. Her husband died quite a number of years ago and for some time past Mrs. Thomas has lived with her children, spending much of her time in Crawfordsville where she had a large and loving circle of friends. She was a lady whose health continued vigorous in her advanced years and she would probably have lived to an unusual age had it not been for an accident she suffered on the 19th of last December. She was then so unfortunate as to fall while rising form a chair and by the fall her hip was broken. From that time until her death her health declined, Mrs. Thomas was a lady of exceptional force of character and purpose. Strong in intellect and body, she was also strong in love and in the performance of her every day life. A devout Christian she made her influence and work felt in the history of the Presbyterian Church in this part of the state. She was a lady of genial mind, however and her many graces endeared her not only to her family but to hundreds of friends who with the family mourn her loss.
Note: She is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Attica, Indiana with her husband. There is a picture of her on findagrave.com
