Martha, wife of Silas D. Thomas, died July 2 at her home near Wingate, after a painful illness of over a year. The funeral occurred Saturday morning at 10 o'clock from the Pleasant Hill Christian church, of which Mrs. Thomas had been a devout member since early childhood. Mrs. Thomas was the daughter of James Gregory and was born in Butler county, Ohio, seventy-two years ago, coming to this county with her parents when but seven years of age. She was a sister of J. A. McClure's aged mother, who is the last survivor of the Gregory family. Mrs. Thomas leaves her husband and one son, J. D. Thomas, her only other child, Mrs. Garner Hormell, dying some six years ago. Mrs. Thomas was one of the pioneers of Montgomery county and a lady of many rare virtues, whose long life of usefulness will long stand as an inspiration to those who knew her - thanks Kim H

Mrs. Martha J. Thomas, wife of Silas A. Thomas, was born in Butler County, Ohio, Nov. 3, 1824. Her father, James Gregory, came to this county from Ohio in 1830 and located in Coal Creek Township. He was long a prominent man in the community, a good farmer, a leader in Pleasant Hill Christian Church, and at one time County Commissioner, and was associated with such men as John Beard, James Hanna, James Heaton, and others.

Mrs. Thomas was married to Silas A. Thomas, Nov. 8, 1849. To them were born two children, James D. and Mary E., wife of Garner Hormell, deceased. They moved to Ohio and lived seven years, since which time they have resided in Coal Creek Township. She joined Pleasant Hill Church at the age of 13 years, since which time she has tried to live a Christian life. She and her husband have been prominent members of that church 40 years, sacrificing and laboring to build up the cause of Christ. Their house was always the home of the minister. Her health has been failing some time and for the past year she has been entirely helpless. Death came and released her from her suffering Thursday evening, July 2, 1896, aged 71 years and seven months.  Her funeral took place at the old home church on Independence Day, her pastor, Rev. F. P. Trotter, officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
