Mrs. Josephine Tuttle Thomas, daughter of Joseph Farrand Tuttle, who for 30 years served as the president of Wabash College, died at Culver Hospital Monday morning after a brief illness. Her death occurred at 2 o'clock and was caused by heart disease and pneumonia. Mrs. Thomas was taken to the hospital last Thursday from the residence of Mrs. Elsie Davidson, Vernon Court where she had been something her homes this winter. Mrs. Thomas was one of Crawfordsville's best known women and was identified prominently with church and civic affairs here for many years. She was the widow of Dr. Charles T. Thomas. Mrs. Thomas was born Jan 31, 1856 at Bloomfield, NJ the daughter of Joseph Farrand Tuttle and Susan King Tuttle. The family resided in Rockaway, NJ for several years and moved to Crawfordsville in 1861 when Dr. Tuttle assumed the preidency of the local school. Dr. Tuttle served as president during Civil War and continued to direct te affairs of the college until 1891. His term of office was longer than that of any other Wabash president. Mrs. Thomas was a membe rof the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church and charter member of the Community House, Athenean Club and Musical Amateurs. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Landon C. Rose of Chicago and sister, Mrs. Everett B. Thompson of Los Angeles, Calif. Funeral arrangements are not complete - transcribed by kbz
