Thewlis - Jonathan

Source: Crawfordsville Star June 25, 1885

Jonathan THEWLIS is a very dead man. On Sunday afternoon he was found lying dead on the floor of his brother David Thewlis' farm house near Linden with 10c worth of strychnine in his stomach. Jonathan took the poison in a fit of despondency. He had been married twice and his last wife lives in the tough neighborhood adjacent to the New Albany depot in this city. Their domestic relations were not pleasant. Jonathan leaves a child by each wife. He was poor and had recently made his home at his brother's. The amount of poison is judged to be a dime's worth from the fact that he had been known a few hours prior to his taking off to have 15c in his pocket and after death a nickle 5 cent piece was the only money found on his person. Coroner Ensminger viewed the remains and brought in a verdict in accordance with these facts, that the deceased came to his death by his own hands while laboring under a mental aberration - kbz
